Truck Driver Training
Course Descriptions
| INTRO | COURSE SCHEDULE | CERTIFICATION |
OrientationThe purpose of this unit is to introduce students to the course, vehicle components, the tractor trailer driver training curriculum and to familiarize students with the industry and professions.
Control SystemsStudents introduced to function, operation and meaning of instruments and controls (gear shift, tachometer, etc.) by demonstration.
ShiftingIntroduce students to basic gear shifting procedures and shift patterns. Introduce students to up and down shifting techniques.
Vehicle InspectionsStudents learn the importance of systematic vehicle inspections and develop the skills necessary for good inspection. Students will learn pre-trip inspection and how to conduct pre-trip, en route, and post-trip inspections.
Hours of Service RequirementsTeach the basic concepts and requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations Part 395 "Hours of Service Regulations" and complete a Driver's Daily Log and logbook recap.
Handling and Documenting CargoGain an understanding of the cargo documentation process; responsibilities of drivers in the preparation and handling of cargo documents; weight distribution guidelines; how to secure and cover cargo; and how to load/unload safely and efficiently.
Accident ProceduresLearn how to follow safe and legal procedures at an accident scene, and to properly report accidents.
Coupling and Uncouplingthe student will demonstrate safe coupling and uncoupling of a tractor-trailer unit.
Speed and Space ManagementTo instruct students on speed management principles, maintaining safe speed in different situations, operating on hills, curves and to properly manage the space required for safe vehicle operation.
Night OperationThe students will learn and demonstrate how to operate safely at night.
Extreme Driving ConditionsDiscuss adjustments for driving in cold and hot weather, stormy conditions, mountain and desert driving.
Railroad CrossingsLearn to recognize potential dangers and appropriate safety procedures at railroad crossings.
Vehicle Systems and Preventative MaintenanceClassroom instruction on function and operation of key vehicle systems, e.g., engine, engine exhaust auxiliary systems, brakes, drive train, coupling systems, and suspension. Provide detailed description of each system, its importance to safe and efficient operation.
Hazard PerceptionClassroom instruction for students to recognize the hazards early enough to take appropriate defensive action to prevent them from becoming emergency situations.
Emergency Maneuvers/Skid Control and AvoidanceClassroom instruction on emergency braking techniques, evasive actions and responses to emergencies. Emergency stops and evasive action practices on range.
